Monolith Productions is probably best known for its "F.E.A.R." and "Condemned" games, but the studio is taking a crack at a comic-inspired title with the upcoming "Gotham City Impostors." I had a chance to play an early build at the Electronic Entertainment Expo this summer, and the game's weird mix of first-person shooter and everyday-joe-turned-superhero felt great. Today, Warner Bros. released a new video of "Impostors," and while it doesn't show off any new gameplay footage, a cool animated short is always welcomed.
The idea behind "Impostors" is that average jerks decide to take to the streets in support of their favorite hero, Batman. Dressed in outfits that resemble some drunken, Halloween version of the Dark Knight, they arm themselves with guns (a direct violation of Bats' modus operandi, of course) to take on the Joker and his minions.
Unfortunately, there's always going to be those that love the dark-side, dressing up as even more freakish versions of the villain, and these battles set the stage for the downloadable game. While it's a bit odd to see the two factions duking it out, basically allowing for massive casualties in a licensed Batman title, the game's campiness stops things from getting too dark.
You'll have access to a variety of gadgets, including grappling hooks and jet-fueled rollerskates. As the matches play out, and you're watching weirdos dressed as the Joker catapult off giant trampolines, the entire affair takes on an enjoyable level of absurdity.
