If ever you wondered why massively multiplayer online games are all going free-to-play, look no further than "DC Universe Online." The previously subscription-only game just recently opened up to all us freeloaders, and by Green Arrow's beard, has this game suddenly taken off with a fury. Just one week into the new tiered structure and over one million new players hopped aboard.

Sony Online Entertainment are obviously more than a little enthused with the sudden onslaught of new players. It's not immediately clear how those million people are split between the game's three options of pay, but it's a staggering number that apparently covers both platform options.

"'DC Universe Online's' transition to free-to-play has been welcomed by the community and gamers with heroic enthusiasm," SOE executive director of entertainment Lorin Jameson said, according to VentureBeat. "In just one week alone, 1 million new players have joined 'DCUO,' with a 50/50 split between PC and PS3."

The three tiers available to players allow you to customize your level of interaction with the game's universe, depending how much you want to shell out. The "free access" tier is just like it sounds: free. You don't have to shell out anything, but your experience is somewhat limited. The next step-up is "premium," which is granted – for life – to anyone who spends a minimum of $ 5 in the game. You'll get more character slots, a larger inventory, etc. Finally, there's the somewhat old-fashioned "legendary" tier, which gives you access to all of the game's content for $ 15 a month.

While it seems pretty obvious that the majority of the new million players probably signed up for the free access, it's completely possible that the allure of $ 5 premium features could have freebie lovers turning into committed players.
