'The Crow' Remake Gets New Director And Writer

Now that Relativity Media and The Weinstein Company have settled their dispute over the rights to "The Crow," it seems as though production on the remake is being fast tracked to make up for lost time. A new director and writer have reportedly been brought on board only a day after the two film companies announced their resolution.

Deadline is reporting that director F. Javier Gutierrez has been hired to helm the project, and Jesse Wigutow is close to closing a deal to write a script. Gutierrez is best known for his 2008 flick "Tres Dias," while Wigutow has only written one feature, 2003's "It Runs in the Family."

Both might not be the biggest names, but it seemed as though Relativity was aiming for lesser known directors and writers with their previous talents as well. Directors Stephen Norrington and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo had both been attached to helm this "The Crow" remake, but have since walked during the film's long time in pre-production. Gutierrez was actually one of the directors rumored to take control of the project after Norrington left, but Fresnadillo got the job instead.

This still leaves the project without an Eric Draven, but Variety is reporting that news should soon be on its way. Their report said that fans can expect news on casting, a production start date and a release date to be announced shortly.

It will be interesting to see whether "The Crow" plans to go big with its leading man, or pick a relative unknown to star as Draven. The previous two incarnations of this project had tapped Mark Wahlberg and Bradley Cooper to star in them, so it seems safe to assume this reboot of the film will go the same route.
