Midnight on July 20 may be a dark night for many fans indeed. /Film broke the news earlier this week that Fandango had quietly started selling advanced tickets for midnight IMAX screenings of "The Dark Knight Rises" in New York, LA and San Francisco.
Great news for Batman fans eagerly awaiting the final movie of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, or so you'd think.
Not long after the news hit, people realized that two of the three showtimes available for purchase were already sold out. The theaters that had made the tickets available and sold out, New York's AMC Loews Lincoln Square and AMC Loews Universal City, are both notable because of their use of authentic 70mm IMAX format. If you remember from the selective prologue screenings, only the super-big 70mm screens got the first six minutes and are considered the ideal conditions for viewing the format.
This may not seem like a huge deal for Batman fans in LA and everywhere else in the country, but Manhattan only has one authentic 70mm screen, the one that's already sold out. Neither Fandango nor AMC made announcements about the advanced tickets sales, and no other times have been made available.
There has been no word from Warner Bros. or Fandango when tickets for 35mm presentations and additional IMAX screenings will be made available, but expect a specified release date similar to what Lionsgate has done for "The Hunger Games."
