As we approach the release of "The Amazing Spider-Man," plot details are slowly rolling out through casting announcements, promotional stills, and the good ole process of elimination. (Clone Saga: probably off the docket.) But speculate no more—at a Tokyo-based press conference on Tuesday to promote the film, the cast and crew revealed a bundle of plot elements. It's not groundbreaking stuff, but they did confirm a lot of cool story details.
SuperHeroHype transcribed the video, uploaded by a a dutiful YouTube user. "In our movie, [Peter] finds his true love," producer Avi Arad said. "Gwen Stacy was always the true love of Peter Parker... We found a very, very good story about what makes a human being. About what sets their destiny."
Emma Stone, who plays Stacey, added another detail: "We haven't even met Mary Jane at this point." In the comics, Mary Jane was a late addition to the revolving Spider-Man entourage; she didn't even become a regular until long into the series. It's not surprising that they're going back to the basics, but it might be a little jarring for fans who've become accustomed to Mary Jane's presence through three movies, a handful of cartoon series, and her relationship with Peter in the comic books.
"We introduce our villain, Dr. Connors," Arad continued, "and in the great tradition of Marvel, Dr. Connors is going to be connected to Peter Parker and, in our case even more interesting, to Gwen Stacy. Right there, the challenge of having to deal with a villain who is a mentor and the only one who you can look at and say, 'So what really happened to my dad?' That's a very hard person to fight."
Daddy issues? In our comic book movies? It's a natural fit. We'll be able to get all the gravitas when "The Amazing Spider-Man" opens in July, but for now, we'll keep an eye out for more details as they arise.
