In the past few weeks, a number of characters from the Marvel Universe have popped up as potential villains or cameos for this summer's tent pole "The Avengers." Most recently, merchandise for the upcoming movie may have revealed one key "Captain America" character's involvement in the film, but could Cap's long-lost love show up too?
Hayley Atwell talked about the prospects of seeing Peggy Carter again while promoting "Captain America: The First Avenger" on Blu-ray, and it doesn't look like she'll be joining the team in "Avengers."
"Unfortunately not. I think I can say that quite safely now. I imagine filming has wrapped on that, so I haven't been part of that project at all," Atwell told The Geek Files.
That isn't to say we've seen the end of Peggy. There is always the question of "Captain America 2." Though the sequel is set to take place in the present, long after Peggy's time, that's never kept a Marvel character from traveling time.
Atwell said she would be open to revisiting the character and seeing where another movie might take her. "I haven't heard anything; I haven't been approached. Of course if they were to bring me back or ask if I was interested, I'd definitely love to go back and revisit that role and develop her. That would be wonderful," she said.
Even though she wouldn't be opposed to another movie as Peggy, Atwell appreciates the freedom of not being tied too closely to the franchise. "There are fans of the comic and of Peggy and Steve's relationship that would probably want to see more of that, but for me as an actor it frees me up from a franchise," she said. "It frees me up creatively from being too established as one particular role, which gives me more creative freedom. At the moment I'm looking at it in that positive light, because I have to. I've got no choice."
