'Powers' Decision Needed By March 1, Says Charles S. Dutton

"Powers," the television adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming's comic book series, has been on a lot of fans' minds lately. FX chief John Landgraf admitted last week that the network has passed on the current version of the "Powers" pilot, and that they're currently considering reshoots. But according to actor Charles S. Dutton, who appears on the show as Captain Cross, an official decision needs to come soon, because contracts are on the cusp of changing.

"Last I heard, without bugging FX, is that they don't know either… but they have to come up with something fast, because on March 1, everybody's deal changes," Dutton told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival, where he's busy promoting his new movie "LUV" with Common and Michael K. Williams. "If I was a betting man, I would be hedging the bet, because we're getting close to that contract date."

Dutton elaborated on some of the issues he saw with the "Powers" pilot, describing it as a "tough translation" to crack.

"I thought that the pilot was pretty good, but it had some concept problems," he said. "It's a comic book and I guess the thing is, do you go all the way out and not try to be saving anything for the pilot episode, or do you just make it flat out what it is, and you'll figure out the second week and the third week and the fourth week? From my perspective, I think that's where some of the problems lie."

"And it's tough," he added. "You have guys talking, and all of the sudden, you blow up a building with a wave of the hand!"

The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Keep it locked with MTV Movies for everything there is to know about Sundance.
