Some how, some way, "Hancock 2" is going to happen… so says Peter Berg.
The director of the 2008 Will Smith-starring superhero film "Hancock" spoke with Comic Book Movie of returning to the virtually indestructible alcoholic hero's universe, saying that while development has been slow going, there are indeed ideas on the table for a sequel—ideals that stem from Smith himself.
"We've been talking about the sequel between us, Will Smith, [producers] Michael Mann and Akiva Goldsman and myself," said Berg. "We're all interested, but we literally just have trouble getting into the same room at the same time. We did have a series of meetings last year and started to hash out an idea for sequel -- and Will Smith actually had the idea -- so I think it will happen, it's just a question of timing."
It's not the first time we've heard chatter about "Hancock 2," though it's certainly the first time in a good little while. Berg spoke with MTV News in late 2009 about where "Hancock" should go moving forward, indicating that an exploration of Smith and co-star Charlize Theron's superhero/god characters' past lives was in the cards.
"We're looking at exploring their relationship prior to when we first met them and seeing a bit of what happened as a prequel," Berg said. "I think we danced around the concept of an origins and we settled on something that is very substantive. That will part of the sequel."
Whether or not that's still part of the plan remains to be seen, but we're certainly curious about how a "Hancock" sequel might take shape.
