The 100th issue of "The Darkness" arrives in stores today, and it has us thinking: when is Jackie Estacado getting his own movie? With two hit video games to date and 100 issues under his belt, Jackie's transition to the silver screen must be coming sooner rather than later.
For those who aren't aware, "The Darkness" is a series of ongoing Top Cow comic books that follow Jackie Estacado, a former hitman for the Franchetti Family mafia. On his 21st birthday, Jackie inherited the power of the Darkness, which has been passed down through the men in his family from generation to generation since the dawn of time. Being both a blessing and a curse, the Darkness is an ancient elemental force that grants its bearer access to an otherwordly dimension of pure darkness as well as power over the demonic entities that inhabit it.
Jackie Estacado himself is a vastly interesting character, often times playing the role of both the hero and the villain simultaneously. It would take a certain combination of machismo and charisma to successfully pull off the part. Here's a list of the five actors that we think would fit the bill perfectly.
» Jason Momoa: Not only does he look the part, but he also has the experience. Best known for his role as Conan in last year's "Conan the Barbarian," Momoa definitely has that whole blood-thirsty antihero thing down pat. He also played Khal Drogo on "Game of Thrones," which gives him plenty of experience in leading a faction of crazy, violent maniacs like the darklings.
» Taylor Kitsch: Star of Disney's upcoming "John Carter" movie, Taylor Kitsch is no stranger to comic book films. Back in 2009, he played the Cajun card-master, Gambit, in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," who is arguably similar to Jackie Estacado in terms of attitude and general badassery. Just replace those playing cards with some demonic entities and you're good to go!
» James Marsters: Although he may not be the youngest option, Marsters definitely knows how to play a good bad guy. His role as Spike in the TV series "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer" gives him loads of experience in playing a being of dark design that occasionally uses his abilities for good. Plus, vampires are like one step away from demons on the monster food chain. Right?
» Josh Holloway: The majority of people will recognize Josh Holloway from his portrayal of Sawyer on the hit TV series "Lost." Sawyer, like Estacado, is narcissistic and rude making it somewhat difficult for us to connect with his character... but because of his charm, we fell in love with the guy despite his flaws. Being the primary antihero of "Lost," Holloway would do a terrific job of making an audience love to hate him as Jackie.
» Viggo Mortensen: The only actor on this list to be nomianted for an Academy Award, Viggo Mortensen could bring a whole nother level of intensity to Jackie Estacado. Also, his role in "Eastern Promises" gives him the edge when it comes to mafia movies. Granted that was the Russian mafia, but some mafioso experience is better than none!
