Joseph Kosinski's "Oblivion" just got a heck of a lot cooler. Up until this point, Tom Cruise had been the only big name involved in the project, with lesser-known actresses Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough joining the movie as its two female leads. Now new reports are saying that Morgan Freeman is lending his talents to the upcoming sci-fi flick as well.
Deadline broke the news, with Variety's Jeff Sneider later adding that Freeman will play a character named Malcolm Beech. He will apparently be portraying the leader of the human resistance on Earth in the post-apocalyptic movie.
Cruise plays the main character in the film, a man named Jak who stayed behind on the highly irradiated Earth to repair ships after the rest of the planet's population departed. Most of humanity lives off-world to avoid the last survivors of a group of lethal aliens that have taken over Earth. Kurylenko plays Jak's wife, and Riseborough is a mysterious woman Jak finds in a crash-landed pod who apparently sets off a chain of unstoppable events that make Jak reevaluate what he knows about Earth and the aliens.
The Deadline story also added that "Toy Story 3" and "Little Miss Sunshine" scribe Michael Ardnt is currently working on a rewrite of the script. William Monahan wrote the first copy of the screenplay, with Karl Gadjusek rewriting it. The whole project is based on a graphic novel Kosinski wrote that Radical Publishing bought the rights to.
At the time, Kosinski said of the creation of the graphic novel, "I was looking to make a science-fiction film that I could do on a budget. It's grown since then, but it's intended to be a very spare science fiction film, with a small cast but big ideas and big landscapes."
