"The Adventures of Tintin" was one of 2011's more charming animated films, and audiences agreed: though it didn't take in tons of money at the American box office, it was a huge overseas success. That's enough to greenlight a sequel for hypothetical release in 2014 or 2015, depending on how things shake out.
Speaking to TotalFilm, director Steven Spielberg discussed the tentative plans for "Tintin 2," like who will be directing it and what stories they'll be using.
First off: Spielberg won't be directing the sequel, unsurprising given his busy work load. "Peter [Jackson]'s doing it," he said. "I wanted to do it, but Peter has to because we made a deal. I said, 'I'll direct the first one, you direct the second one.'
"And Peter, of course, is going to do it right after he finishes photography on 'The Hobbit,'" Spielberg added. "He'll go right into the 31, 21 days of performance capture."
Jackson will be working on "The Hobbit" for God knows how long, which means "Tintin 2" is probably a little while away. Fine by us, as I'm guessing there will probably be a few interesting movies that come out in between now and then. We'll be able to deal.
Referring to the proposed story for a sequel, Spielberg played coy. "We're not telling the world what books we're basing the second movie on yet," he said. "We have completed a story outline now. We have a writer on it. I'm just not declaring what it is. It will be more than one book, but no more than two."
Faithful readers, there are but 24 "Tintin" books, of which three have already been used -- it can't be too hard to figure out which of the remaining will work, and which ones won't. (We're guessing not the blatantly imperialist stories in which Tintin fights a bunch of Native Americans.) Get to work!
