Ryan Reynolds: R-Rated 'Deadpool' Is Not Connected To 'Wolverine'

It seems as though fans have been clamoring for Ryan Reynolds to star in a Deadpool movie since his role in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" was first announced. I still remember sitting in the Hall H audience at Comic-Con in 2008 when Hugh Jackman introduced the first footage for the 2009 superhero film, and hearing the crowd lose their mind when they saw Reynolds in costume for the first time.

But "Wolverine" is considered far from the best "X-Men" movie, and with "X-Men: First Class" taking the franchise in a new direction, it seems that any hope of following the franchise in that direction is lost (especially with the continued delays on James Mangold's "The Wolverine"). There has been some forward momentum on a "Deadpool" movie, though, with Tim Miller attached to direct and the flick given a tentative 2014 release date. In the end, it seems like Reynolds and the fans have been driving the interest in that project more than anyone else.

Reynolds recently sat down with IGN and talked about the current status on the project. It turns out that "Deadpool" might be closer than we once thought.

"The script is, I think, fantastic. It's been developed further in the last three months or so. But the film has to be rated R and has to be done a certain way and it has to be through all these things, and I'm sure it can be a little bit worrisome for the guy who's cutting the checks for it," Reynolds said. "If it's going to be done, it has to be done right."

At least a "Deadpool" movie would be starting from scratch. Reynolds promised that this new flick would have "no connection" to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which ended up having Deadpool be one of its antagonists. This project would take its time exploring Deadpool's past and mythology.

"If we ended up doing a 'Deadpool' movie, that'd be a lot of fun," Reynolds said. "I think having the opportunity to do it rated R would have to mean the budget is down enough that you're given the opportunity to take big risks and do things that most superhero movies haven't been able to."

Just don't expect there to be a "Green Lantern 2" any time soon. When IGN asked Reynolds if there was any chance of seeing him pick up the power ring any time soon, he didn't offer much hope.

"I have no idea. You know, I have no idea. Those movies have huge scale budgets and those sorts of things. Personally, working in the budget world of that kind of level is not as much fun, because there's so much investment in the outcome," he said.
