When you make $ 105 million and counting worldwide on a shoestring budget of $ 12 million, someone's going to take notice. Such is the case with "Chronicle," which now officially has a sequel in development.
Deadline reports that Max Landis, who wrote the first "Chronicle" and is the man responsible for the "Death and Return of Superman" short that hit the web last month, has been set to start writing "Chronicle 2" for Fox. The move isn't surprising considering, well, everything I just said a second ago. But there are a lot of questions circling the project, some of which include spoilers. Join us after the jump at your own risk.
For starters, while Landis is on board, it's totally unknown whether or not "Chronicle" director Josh Trank is back in action for the sequel. At the moment, it's looking to me like a no: you'll recall that Trank is currently flirting with Sony's "Venom" solo film. I already think that movie isn't the world's brightest idea, but honestly, I'm not sure that "Chronicle 2" is a much better career move for Trank.
Commercially, sure, "Chronicle" is a proven commodity, and that's going to dictate a lot at the end of the day. But creatively, the story's been told. There's only one survivor in the mix, and the film's two most interesting characters are dead as disco. Dane DeHaan and Michael B. Jordan were the heart and soul of "Chronicle," and without them, I'm just not that interested. I'm even less interested in a prequel that would include those characters — Trank and Landis said everything they could with those guys based on the way they wrote the story, as far as I'm concerned.
All that said, there are interesting threads to pick up on in the "Chronicle" universe. How did these boys get their powers? What's really in that hole? Bring a new set of characters in and a brand new setting to explore those questions, and maybe I could be convinced. As it stands, I'd rather see Landis and Trank (if he's involved) trying their hands at new creative endeavors (that don't involve Venom, preferably).
