'Walking Dead' Actor Recalls Final Days On Set

Warning: spoilers for last week's "Walking Dead" ahead.

Alas, poor Randall. We knew you… not too well, really. But in the short time that Rick Grimes and company held the young man captive, we watched Randall suffer through some of the worst offenses that "Walking Dead" has ever seen: torture by man, torture by zombie, death by man, resurrection as zombie, death by man again. It's a vicious cycle.

For actor Michael Zegen, however, it wasn't just a vicious cycle, but an awesome one. The actor gave an exit interview with TVLine to talk about the ins and outs of his work on "Walking Dead," what he enjoyed most and what was hardest on him.

"I tried my best to persuade them to keep Randall around, but unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be," the actor said. "I didn't want to leave. I loved working on that show. I loved the people involved; I loved the crew."

Zegen recognizes that however hard it was for him to leave "The Walking Dead," it was that much harder for Jon Bernthal to make his exit.

"It was emotional for him," he said. "As much as I wanted to stay, I think he wanted to stay twice as much, so I can't even imagine how he must have felt."

Before his death, Randall's full story was never made clear. Was he really a threat to the group, or did he just fall into the wrong crowd as he said? Zegen had some thoughts on the debate: "I think he just fell in with the wrong crowd. Everybody was dying around him, and he somehow linked up with this group who probably had a few rapists and killers among them. And it was really that he had to join them to survive."

Even though his days on "Walking Dead" are at an end, Zegen said he had the time of his life on the show.

"Like I said to AMC, I got the full Walking Dead experience," he said. "I got to play a survivor, I got to kill a zombie, and then I got to turn into a zombie. It was great."
