Welcome to 2012, where a prophesied Mayan apocalypse looms and possible comic book movie spoilers are revealed through action figures. In other words, not much has changed since last year, besides the apocalypse part.
This week, potential spoilers for two of the year's biggest comics-movie releases — "Marvel's The Avengers" and "The Amazing Spider-Man" — have once again hit the web courtesy of upcoming tie-in toy lines. Click past the jump for the details.
Starting with Earth's Mightiest Heroes, it's long been rumored that "The Avengers" would be battling against more foes than just Loki in the upcoming Joss Whedon-directed superhero flick. Thanks to a product description from NECA's line of "Avengers" HeroClix, we may now know who that second villain is: Red Skull, played in "Captain America: The First Avenger" by Hugo Weaving. Though far from official, Skull is already a known quantity in the Marvel movie universe, complete with a connection to the film's deadly Cosmic Cube; his involvement in "The Avengers" is certainly possible, if not extremely likely.
In further toy-spoilers news, some new photos of upcoming "Amazing Spider-Man" tie-in products have hit the web, further fueling the validity of previously seen Lizard concept designs. Looks like we're getting a Koopa-styled Curt Connors after all! More interesting than the design itself, however, is an upcoming "Amazing Spider-Man" MegaBloks play-set called "Oscorp Tower FX Battle," which suggests that a long rumored set piece involving SWAT officers-turned-Lizard minions is indeed in the works. SlashFilm has more on that possibility.
