Tough! Gritty! Serious! These new stills from the Judge Dredd relaunch, "Dredd," are all about that.
It's already a sharper, more emphatic movie Dredd than we're used to -- one with his helmet on, unlike the previous Sly Stallone iteration. Instead, all we see of star Karl Urban is his five o'clock shadow and his impenetrable frown, just the way it's supposed to be. He is the law, truly.
You have to admire Dredd's gun technique -- front and center, with both hands on the handle, a firm grip to immediately react to any sort of criminal nonsense in his way. Standing next to Olivia Thirlby's Judge Anderson -- which, by the way, what? -- Dredd looks serious as heck and ready to stomp heads. He does not look like the nicest guy to have a cup of afternoon tea with, either. Whatever could you possibly talk about? It's all "frown frown frown, I'm a cop" on his end. Some people.
About that Thirlby confusion -- a dystopian sci-fi action flick where she shoots people in the head isn't the vehicle we would've guessed for her, not after a nice little string of work on heartfelt indie-ish comedies like "Juno" and "The Wackness." But it will break her to a new audience, one with a little more spending power, should "Dredd" take off the way it's meant to. That will give her the capital to get started on the long-waited "Juno 2," we're guessing. (Joke, joke, that doesn't exist and hopefully never will.)
"Dredd" comes out on September 21, 2012.
