Consider this yet another bump in the road for the long-stalled comic book-to-TV adaptation of Marvel's "Powers." Lucy Punch, the actress who played Deena Pilgrim in FX's pilot for "Powers," has officially joined the cast of Fox's new comedy "Ned Fox Is My Manny," which indicates that she is out of the running if FX does end up picking up a full run of "Powers."
Deadline broke the news of Punch's recent casting, but "Powers" co-creator Brian Michael Bendis was quick to say that this doesn't signal the end for "Powers." "Though Lucy Punch has moved on, Powers TV is not dead. If it was I would tell you honest & true. New scripts have been ordered for more episodes & there will be news in May about how we are going forward," he wrote in a Facebook post.
He added, "The network is behind us all the way. It's quite nice. It's going to be a long haul but it's all about quality. I desperately want the best show we can make."
It's nice that "Powers" is finally coming together for Bendis and his co-creator Michael Avon Oeming. But does the news that FX is looking to talk more about the project in May mean that there will be a whole new cast for the new series? Maybe, if we're to read into star Charles S. Dutton's recent comments about the current cast's contracts
"Last I heard, without bugging FX, is that they don't know either… but they have to come up with something fast, because on March 1, everybody's deal changes," Dutton told MTV News at Sundance. "If I was a betting man, I would be hedging the bet, because we're getting close to that contract date."
With Punch out, it could be an indication that not all of the original cast members are willing to stick around. Still, it's a good sign that FX seems willing to move forward on "Powers." And, since we haven't seen the show's pilot yet, we wouldn't be too heartbroken if a new group of actors came in to replace the original ones.
