Like most film projects in Hollywood, good things come to those who wait. And we have been waiting many years for the adaptation of "The Last Days of American Crime" to get off the ground. Turns out it finally has, though, as commercials and video director Anthony Mandler is now attached to the movie.
Deadline has the news, saying that Mandler will direct from a script that Karl Gajdusek has written. If you remember, it was comic author Rick Remender who wrote the first draft of the screenplay based on his graphic novel.
There's one big detail that the Deadline story is missing, though. Never once is Sam Worthington's involvement mentioned.
Worthington's name has been connected to "Last Days" since 2009. The project has had its ups and downs ever since, and even had director F. Gary Gray attached to direct last year. But that production start date has come and gone with no actual forward momentum on the film, and now we are here with the news that Mandler has come on board.
Radical Publishing's "Last Days" has always been close to Worthington's heart, which is why it's surprising the Deadline story never mentions him once. It does mention that Noomi Rapace was apparently attached at some point, however.
"Last Days" takes place a few years into the future when America's government has unveiled a new form of mind control called "American Freedom Initiative," planned to get rid of crime completely. The story follows security guard Graham Brick, who hires leading man Kevin Cash and his girlfriend Shelby Dupree to help him steal one of the mind control machines in what will turn out to be potentially the last crime ever committed on American soil.
