The upcoming "Marvel Universe" programming block for Disney XD will feature a lot of things Marvel-related, but first and foremost will be "Ultimate Spider-Man," a familiar title and concept to many comic book fans. "Ultimate" follows the adventures of a teenaged Spider-Man trying to figure his life out while juggling supervillains, high school, girls, and more (you know the drill). With a number of big comic names such as Brian Michael Bendis, Joe Kelly and Paul Dini working on the series, it seems like it's got a good chance to be a respectable addition to the animated Spider-Man mythos.
A new "Ultimate" clip comes to us via Entertainment Weekly, in which we see an interaction between Spider-Man and Nick Fury, showing up in his familiar Ultimate incarnation. From the start, it's clear that Fury knows a good deal about Spidey's personal life. "With great power comes great responsibility," he says. "Good words from a good man."
It gets heavier from there, as Fury reveals that he's got quite the offer for young Peter Parker. "I want to SHIELD train you to be a better Spider-Man: the Ultimate Spider-man," Fury says as some unsubtle titles flash around Spidey, who looks as shocked as shocked can be through a mask.
"And how Ultimate is Ultimate?" he asks. To respond, Fury pulls out a gun and fires a shot at a flag pole on the side of a building, which falls off and hits a would-be robber in the back of the head, possibly giving him permanent brain damage.
"That Ultimate," Fury says. It's a little corny, but it's a cartoon show and the umpteenth animated iteration we've seen so far from Spider-Man. Corniness is usually the rule with these things, not the exception, but that doesn't mean that this can't be great. It's for the kids!
"Ultimate Spider-Man" premieres on April 1, if you're counting down.
