Melissa Leo

Another major star has joined the cast of Joseph Kosinski's long-anticipated film, "Oblivion." Melissa Leo, best known for her Oscar-winning turn in "The Fighter," has come on board in an unidentified role.

Deadline broke the casting news, but unfortunately has few details to offer beyond the fact that Leo is in the cast. She joins Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough in the science fiction project.

Universal just recently gave "Oblivion" an April 26, 2013 release date. The film is currently shooting in Baton Rouge, and will reportedly be wrapped earlier than the studio expected. Leo is likely playing a new role in the project, though it's interesting that Kosinski hired her at such a late date. There's also the potential that she only has a small role, so she doesn't need to be on set for the full time Kosinski and the rest of the crew are shooting. We'll have to continue to speculate until we get official confirmation of Leo's part in the film.

Not much is known about the plot of "Oblivion," but it has been reported that the movie is set in a world where Earth's surface is uninhabitable. Cruise plays a man whose job is to repair drones down on Earth, and ends up discovering a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod. A previously released synopsis teases that this discovery "sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows."
