Superheroes have been forced to wear skin-tight outfits since way back when, but in Spider-Man's case, it's literally skin tight. Or at least that's the case in Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man," according to leading man Andrew Garfield.
The man better known as Peter Parker stopped by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" this morning (his co-star/real-life girlfriend Emma Stone will be appearing tomorrow!) to chat about all things "Spider-Man" in anticipation of the movie's July 3 release. Talk turned serious when Garfield started talking about just how uncomfortable that suit was, though.
"It's made of something that's designed to make you irritated. I don't know what the exact name is, but that's the description on the [label]," he said.
Garfield went on to explain the first time he really had to embrace the flattering nature of his Spidey suit.
"One of the first nights we were out on location in downtown LA, we were in a parking structure. I knew there were paparazzi taking terrible unflattering shots of my, you know, everything," he said. "It was an acting exercise. The whole point of wearing a mask is you feel free and you can be whatever you want and you can be witty. That was the whole point; Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man and he becomes this other ego, his alter-ego. But knowing that your keister has been shot from many different angles makes you very uncomfortable."
The 28-year-old Brit went on to discuss how hard he had to work out in order to get a superhero-ready body in time for the movie. Turns out he waited until after he was cast to start working out and, once he did, it was no easy feat to get into tip-top shape.
"It was a lifechange," Garfield said of having to get in shape for the movie. "I get frustrated with men's health magazines you know, because it's like in five minutes you'll be as fit as a fiddle if you just follow these three simple steps and eat cucumbers, but this is hard work. I wouldn't be able to do it without someone [helping]."
