Batman's going to have his hands full this summer when "Dark Knight Rises" rolls into town. He'll be up against one massive villain with an entire army behind him, a femme fatale with "an underlying darkness," and possibly even more threats than that. The Dark Knight's seen his fair share of conflict in his day, but perhaps these new adversaries will prove too much even for him.
Thanks to a new feature in Entertainment Weekly, we have an even better idea about the baddies coming Bats' way in the upcoming summer blockbuster. EW spoke with director Christopher Nolan and the actors behind Bane and Catwoman — Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway respectively — about the forces of nature barreling towards Batman in "Rises."
Bane's voice was once again a hot topic of conversation, with Hardy offering: "It's a risk, because we could be laughed at—or it could be very fresh and exciting." He added that audiences shouldn't get "too concerned about the mumbly voice," because they'll be able to "tune to its setting" as the film trucks along.
Besides, ridiculous voice aside, Bane is no laughing matter. Nolan described the character as representing "formidable physical strength, combined with absolute evil of intention." A fantastic description if we've ever heard one.
Hathaway spoke out about Selina Kyle, too, saying she was inspired by screen legends Hedy Lamarr and Jean Harlow for her performance. "I had to physically transform," she said. "Chris sat me down at the beginning and said, 'Joseph Gordon-Levitt did all of his own fighting in 'Inception.' That one zero-gravity fight? He trained for two months.' I basically left his office and went to the gym and just came out about five minutes ago."
"She has a very strong way of protecting herself and those she cares about, which implies an underlying darkness," Nolan added about the character.
