"Man of Steel" actor Michael Shannon has already told us that the main draw for him to play General Zod is the Kryptonian villain's status as a military man.
"Being a general," he said. "To me, that's a fascinating, iconoclastic character. I can't imagine being a sergeant, let alone a general. He's in charge of the entire military of Krypton. That's going to take every little shred of imagination that I have. It's a good challenge because it's a big distance to have to go."
But Shannon's fascination with playing a general wouldn't be enough to rope him into starring in the Superman reboot on its own. Speaking with Black Book, the "Boardwalk Empire" actor revealed that deciding on suiting up for "Man of Steel" came down to believing that the script can fly.
"One of the main things on that is that Chris Nolan and David Goyer were in there writing the script, and those guys know what they're doing," he told Black Book. "It can't just be because it's Superman. There's no promises anybody's going to automatically love the movie just because it's Superman. There still has to be quality in all aspects of it. And yeah, I felt very confident making the decision to be involved because of the script, and because of [director Zack Snyder's] work as well."
Shannon stars in "Man of Steel" opposite Henry Cavill as Clark Kent, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Costner as Pa Kent, Russell Crowe as Jor-El and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White. The movie leaps tall buildings in a single bound and lands in theaters on June 14, 2013.
