It's a good time to be Rooney Mara, what with her Oscar-nominated performance as Lisbeth Salander in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," and her football royalty family's current stake in the New York Giants taking on the New England Patriots at this year's Super Bowl.
Like her sister, Kata Mara is riding a solid wave as well, having just completed a literally haunting turn as undead psychopath Hayden on "American Horror Story." But it could have been an even better year for Mara, who was reportedly up for the role of Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" — an experience she's likely sad to have missed out on, but one she's excited to see on the big screen all the same.
"Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite directors and just to get the opportunity to test for such an iconic role as Catwoman was an honor," Mara told ESPN in a new interview.
"I couldn't talk about it for a while because the movie was so top-secret," she added. "But I am excited to see how it all turns out."
Though I'm as excited as anyone to see Anne Hathaway's take on Selina, particularly given the tease of her performance in the most recent "Dark Knight Rises" trailer, I gotta say… Mara would have made for an amazing Catwoman. Anyone who watched her on "American Horror Story" this past season would be hard-pressed to speak against Mara's capacity for playing off-kilter, semi-psychotic (or full blown, as the case may be) women with their own unique brand of justice. That's Catwoman at her worst. I don't doubt for a second that Hathaway's going to bring it as Selina, but Mara would've done a killer job as well.
Thanks to Comic Book Movie for the head's up.
