Excellent news: class is back in session at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters! It will be soon, at least, according to a new report that Matthew Vaughn is officially locked and loaded to direct a sequel to "X-Men: First Class."
Deadline reports that Vaughn and 20th Century Fox have just closed a deal for the "First Class" director to come back for another "X-Men" outing. Simon Kinberg is working on the film's screenplay, as previously reported, and Bryan Singer is once again producing.
No official title or casting news just yet, though we've been lovingly referring to the film as "X-Men: Second Class" for some time now, and it's widely assumed that James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender will be back in business as Professor X and Magneto before long.
Indeed, both McAvoy and Fassbender have made it well known that they already have ideas for where to take the story of Charles and Erik's shattered friendship in future "X-Men" movies.
"I'm very interested to see where we pick up with Charles Xavier, to be honest. In the film we just did, 'First Class,' we got to see how Magneto becomes Magneto, how he leaves Erik behind and takes on the persona of Magneto," Fassbender told MTV News last November. "We've yet to see how Charles develops into Professor X. I think that's going to be interesting to take a look at."
McAvoy agreed with Fassbender's desires, saying: "[Xavier's] got some major sh-- to deal with. He's just been paralyzed and he's been betrayed by the person who he's probably come to care about more than anybody else in the world, and he's the guy who did it to him."
However the story shakes out, it seems that one thing is now certain: Vaughn will be back to lead the "X-Men" once again.
