Who says live capture animation is for dorks? Not the Visual Effects Society, that's for sure.
The VES announced nominations for its 10th annual awards ceremony honoring visual effects, with "The Adventures of Tintin" leading the way at six nominations over four categories dedicated to animation. They even snagged three of the five nominations in the Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Motion Picture category, surely a gut punch to the other animated films that came out this year. But what hope could they have against a cartoon dog?
Also receiving multiple nominations were "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," with five each. "Rango" and "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" each got four, with "Puss in Boots" and "Hugo" at three each. They'll all look to strike gold at the February 7 ceremony, which takes place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Stan Lee will receive the VES 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award, while Douglas Trumbull will receive the Georges Méliès Award, given to visual effects pioneers. Lee, as you know, is the creator/impresario behind Marvel Comics. Trumbull's resume is less flashy, but equally distinguished: he did effects on movies like "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Blade Runner," before returning to action with 2010's "The Tree of Life." They're awards well-awarded, so you won't have to send in your petition boycotting the show just yet.
