The CW's Green Arrow Pilot Gains Its John Diggle

The casting continues to come together for the CW's upcoming Green Arrow pilot. "Arrow" has already found its titular superhero in the form of Stephen Amell, and now it seems to have found its bodyguard Diggle as well.

Variety is reporting that David Ramsey, who can currently be seen on CBS's "Blue Bloods" as the mayor of New York, has landed the role of John Diggle. When the character descriptions for "Arrow" were revealed back in January, Diggle was one of the four main protagonists of the show.

At the time, Diggle was described as a 35-year-old African American who is "really, really big," a former military man in Afghanistan and a current bodyguard for hire. "Hired by Moira to be Oliver's chauffeur and protector, Diggle soon finds he is trapped in a battle of wits, as Oliver [Queen] repeatedly eludes his protection," the bio reads. "But in fact, Diggle's primary conflict is one of loyalty — he has to show that he's working for Oliver, not Moira, before Oliver will give him a smidgen of trust."

The name Diggle seemingly is a reference to "Green Arrow: Year One" writer Andy Diggle. Andrew Kreisberg, Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim wrote the script for the "Arrow" pilot, which David Nutter is directing and executive producing. According to CW development head Thom Sherman, the Green Arrow has more in common with Jason Bourne than with the CW's long-running Superman series, "Smallville."

"It's a very provocative and sophisticated and edgy [show]," he said of the pilot. "It's not as comic book-y as Smallville or other [superhero projects] from other networks."
