Well, it's not "Fantastic Four," but it might do.
"Chronicle" director Josh Trank is very likely about to take on another super-powered tale, albeit of a very different size and shape: according to The Los Angeles Times, he's in negotiations with Sony Pictures to tackle a big-screen take on Venom, the tongue-lashing spaceborne nemesis of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Very little is known about the "Venom" film right now. Some years ago, "Zombieland" and "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick took a crack at a script, and "Hunger Games" director Gary Ross was attached at one point, too. Looks like we know how that all turned out: the LA Times report indicates that a new writer is being brought on board, so the Reese and Wernick script is likely out the door, and with Trank possibly in, that's bye-bye Gary. Likewise, Topher Grace, who played the villain in "Spider-Man 3," is "not expected to reprise the role" in the solo film.
Whether or not Trank takes on the director's gig is still a question with no clear answer, but the possibility of his involvement is intriguing at least. With "Chronicle," the young director proved himself capable of creating a fascinating villain from start to finish. I don't know that Venom would be my first choice of characters that Trank should take on — in fact, I know he isn't — but there's still potential there, depending on the take Trank's going for. I like the director a lot, and when treated correctly, I like the character a lot. I'll hold out judgment on this one… but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't feeling a bit "meh" about it all.
