When MTV News caught up with Joss Whedon at South by Southwest, the goal was to talk about his new movie, "The Cabin In The Woods." Still, we'd be remiss if we didn't ask him about finishing up "The Avengers," given how close we are to the film's May 4 premiere. And given how long he's worked on the movie, you wouldn't be at all surprised to hear what he's most satisfied about.
"The most satisfying thing about 'The Avengers' is that soon I will finish it," Whedon said with a laugh. "It's quite an undertaking. Although listening to Alan Silvestri conduct an 80-piece orchestra didn't suck. It was a really beautiful experience. Really, he did such a good job, it sounds so good. You're listening to live music and watching the movie sort of form in a way that it doesn't until it has that music."
That's just how Whedon felt on his own, though. When it came to working with the actors, he was all compliments. "It was just having them all together, just the energy they'd give each other and the way they'd play off each other and protect each other narratively, making sure that whoever they're coming up against has as much juice as they did," he said. "It would be easy to imagine they'd be all 'me me me me me,' but it was always 'us us us.' That was really fun. Except sometimes they would just gossip so much and talk and, 'Guys, we're rolling! We have to make a movie! This isn't a party.'"
With the movie so close, Whedon only wants one thing from the audience: enjoy it, and maybe see it again. "I want them to feel exhausted and fulfilled," he said. "Not unlike 'Cabin.' It's a ride. We put the screws to it, really put the characters through it and I really want the audience to be with them every step of the way, and then just kind of go, 'That was an extraordinary experience. And now I want to pay to see it again.' That's what I want."
"The Avengers" is out on May 4, while "The Cabin In The Woods" comes out on April 13.
