Marvel Studios has never been shy about making an unconventional hiring choice for one of its movies. Who else would've recast the former Human Torch as Captain America, or asked a Shakespearean actor to direct a movie about Thor?
But this may be the most off-kilter choice to date: Vulture reports that Marvel is considering Anthony and Joseph Russo, best known for directing and producing episode of NBC's "Community," to take over the Captain America movie sequel.
If you're confused as to how work on a screwball comedy could translate into an eye for big screen action... well, you're not alone. The decision may come down to feel more than explicit credentials, which the Russos have to be happy about given their experience on comedies like "You, Me and Dupree" and "Happy Endings."
"Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios' president of production] is a 'vibe guy,'" said Vulture's source. "He likes to see if he gets along with people before he'll decide about spending the next two years with them. And apparently, they hit it off with Kevin in the room."
They join a very exclusive directorial shortlist that includes George Nolfi ("The Adjustment Bureau") and F. Gary Gray ("The Italian Job," "Law Abiding Citizen") -- meaning we should hear about an official decision sooner rather than later. But, as Vulture points out, Marvel's also known for quickly changing its mind: "Thor 2" director Patty Jenkins was let go without warning, with "Game of Thrones" director Alan Taylor hired to take her place.
Of course, "Captain America 2" is still a long, long time away -- 2014 is the tentative release year, assuming the world doesn't end in December -- giving Feige and his team all the time they need to find the right choice. In the meantime, we've still got an "Avengers" movie to see on May 4.
